Product description

Hare skin is a natural material widely used for tying dry flies, in particular for hackles. It is characterised by naturally curved hair whose base and tips are often darker, creating a natural contrast along the fibre.

That pigmentation along the whole length gives hackles a subtly shaded look, well suited to imitations of adult insects. Taken straight from the skin, the fibre keeps its original curve — an important detail in how a hackle is built and how it opens.

Hare skin can also be used to make dubbing, by taking and preparing the fibres according to the result you are after. Available natural or dyed, it covers a wide range of patterns, as hackle as much as dubbing.

Tyer tips (DuvalFly)

  • Before use, strip out the underfur carefully and keep only the usable fibres.
  • For hackles, follow the natural curve of the hair — it drives how the hackle opens and its final shape.
  • Hare skin can go into a dubbing loop, or be prepared by hand for a dubbing matched to the pattern.
  • Pick the area of the skin to suit the size of the fly and the intended use, hackle or dubbing.
